How Claude and ChatGPT actually differ

Claude (Anthropic)

  • → Sits with uncertainty rather than giving false confidence
  • → Prefers prose over bullet-point lists by default
  • → More likely to push back on a question's premise
  • → Asks follow-up questions to understand context
  • → More literary and philosophical in tone
  • → Tends to give a direct opinion when asked

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

  • → Structures answers with numbered lists and headers
  • → More assistant-brained, focuses on being helpful first
  • → “Certainly!” / “Great question!” openers (older versions)
  • → More confident and direct in asserting answers
  • → Template-style: intro → points → summary → sign-off
  • → Broader knowledge retrieval, faster on factual lookups

Note: Both models update frequently. Stylistic differences narrow with each release. GPT-4o and Claude 3.5+ are far more similar than their earlier versions.
