What Is AGI? The Honest Explanation Nobody Else Will Give You

The Word That Has Taken Over Tech — And What It Actually Means

AGI is everywhere. Sam Altman says OpenAI is "confident we know how to build it." Elon Musk says it is two years away (he has been saying this for five years). Google DeepMind published a paper trying to formally define it. The EU AI Act has provisions for it. Governments are writing policy about it.

And most of the explanations you will read are either too abstract to mean anything, or too technical to follow, or quietly shaped by the agenda of whoever is writing them.

Here is the honest version.

The Simple Definition

AGI — Artificial General Intelligence — is an AI system that can perform any intellectual task a human can perform, at or above human level, across domains.

The key word is *general*. Today's AI systems are narrow: GPT-4 is extraordinarily good at language tasks but cannot drive a car, perform surgery, or navigate a new city. AlphaFold revolutionised protein structure prediction but cannot write a poem. A chess engine beats every human alive but cannot make you a cup of tea.

A general intelligence does not have this limitation. It can learn new domains, transfer knowledge across contexts, and apply reasoning to problems it has never seen before — the same way a competent human can be dropped into an unfamiliar situation and figure it out.

Why Everyone Argues About the Definition

Here is where it gets complicated: nobody fully agrees on what "general intelligence" actually means, which means nobody agrees on what AGI actually means.

The benchmark disagreement. Some researchers say AGI means passing a Turing test convincingly. Others say that is too easy — current LLMs can already fool most people in text conversations. Some say AGI means matching human performance on standardised cognitive tests. Others say tests can be gamed and real AGI means genuine understanding, not pattern matching.

The "just software" critique. A significant number of AI researchers (Yann LeCun at Meta being the most prominent) argue that current LLMs — no matter how capable they get — cannot reach AGI because they fundamentally lack something: embodiment, causal reasoning, or a world model. On this view, scaling up language models is like adding more RAM to a calculator. You get a faster calculator, not a human brain.

The "we're already there" claim. On the opposite end, researchers like Shane Legg (Google DeepMind co-founder, who first coined the term AGI in its modern usage) have suggested that systems like GPT-4 may already meet some reasonable definitions of AGI for certain domains.

The goalpost problem. AI has a long history of reaching milestones that were supposed to be "AGI-level" — chess, Go, medical image diagnosis, bar exams — only for people to say "well, that's not really intelligence, that's just pattern matching." This keeps happening. The definition of what counts as real intelligence keeps shifting as AI achieves things that previously seemed to require it.

What AGI Is Not

AGI is not superintelligence. Superintelligence would be an AI dramatically smarter than the smartest humans at everything — science, strategy, creativity, social reasoning. AGI is the threshold before that: matching human general capability. Superintelligence is what some researchers fear could come after AGI, once an AI is smart enough to improve itself.

AGI is not conscious. Nothing about general intelligence requires consciousness, subjective experience, or feelings. AGI as a technical term is about capability, not inner life. Whether an AGI would be conscious is a genuinely separate question — one that philosophy has not answered for humans, let alone hypothetical machines.

AGI is not one thing. There is no consensus that AGI is a single moment or a single system. It might be a gradual capability expansion where at some point, looking back, you can say "we crossed the threshold" — rather than a moment like a light switch flipping.

How Close Are We?

Honestly: nobody knows. Here is the landscape of credible positions.

The optimists (OpenAI, some DeepMind researchers): Current scaling laws — more compute, more data, bigger models — continue to produce capability gains. The path to AGI is more of the same, with better architectures. Some at OpenAI have said they believe AGI could arrive before 2030.

The cautious optimists: LLMs have made extraordinary progress in the last five years. It would be surprising if that progress stopped. But we are likely missing key ingredients — better memory systems, deeper causal reasoning, more efficient learning from less data. AGI requires those, and they are not trivially achieved by scaling.

The sceptics (LeCun, Gary Marcus, many academic researchers): Current systems have fundamental architectural limitations. LLMs predict the next token — they are extraordinarily sophisticated pattern matchers operating on text. This is useful but it is not how intelligence works. You cannot get to AGI from here without a fundamentally different approach, and we do not know what that approach is yet.

The position nobody will say out loud: We have no reliable theory of intelligence. We cannot define it precisely. We cannot measure it consistently. Saying we are "close to AGI" or "far from AGI" is therefore partly a statement about the world and partly a statement about which definition you are using. Anyone who gives you a confident timeline is making a bet, not a prediction.

What Would AGI Actually Change?

Assuming AGI arrived — some system that could genuinely perform any intellectual task a capable human can perform — the implications would be enormous:

Scientific research. An AGI could read and synthesise all existing scientific literature, generate novel hypotheses, design experiments, and iterate — at a speed and scale no human institution can match. Fields like drug discovery, materials science, and climate modelling would accelerate dramatically.

Economic disruption. Work that requires general intellectual capability — analysis, planning, writing, coding, decision-making — becomes automatable. This is a much wider category than what current narrow AI automates. The economic and social consequences would be significant and difficult to predict.

The alignment problem becomes critical. A narrow AI being misaligned with human values is a limited problem — it operates in a constrained domain. A general AI being misaligned is potentially catastrophic — it can pursue any goal across any domain. This is why AI safety research exists and why organisations like Anthropic (who built Claude) treat alignment as their primary research priority.

Power concentration. Whoever controls AGI has an enormous strategic advantage over everyone who does not. This is why governments are so interested in AI policy and why national AI strategies have become a major geopolitical consideration.

The Questions That Actually Matter

More than "when will AGI arrive," the questions worth asking are:

Who controls it? A narrow AI owned by a corporation is one thing. A general AI owned by a corporation — or a government — is a different category of power asymmetry.

What do we do with the transition period? Even before AGI, AI is disrupting labour markets, concentrating wealth in AI-owning companies, and raising new questions about what education, work, and expertise are for. These problems exist now and require answers now.

What counts as good enough oversight? If AI systems become capable enough to make consequential decisions — medical, legal, financial, military — who is responsible for checking their work? The answer cannot just be "another AI."

Does the definition even matter? Practically speaking, the thing that matters is not whether a system meets an abstract definition of AGI. It is what the system can do and what the consequences of that are. A system that can do everything a radiologist can do, even if it falls short of "general intelligence," changes radiology. A system that can do most knowledge work, even if a researcher somewhere says it is not truly AGI, changes knowledge work.

The Honest Bottom Line

AGI is real as a concept and real as a goal that serious, well-funded organisations are actively pursuing. Whether current AI is close to it depends entirely on which definition you use — and the people with the most financial incentive to say it is close are the ones saying it is close.

What is not in doubt: AI systems are becoming more capable, faster than most people expected five years ago. The specific milestone of "AGI" may be fuzzy, but the direction of travel is clear.

The most useful thing you can do with the concept of AGI is not try to predict when it will arrive. It is to think clearly about what the growing capability of AI systems — whether we call them AGI or not — means for the decisions you make now: about learning, about work, about policy, about what kind of future you want to be building toward.

The hype will keep coming. The honest version is: we are building something powerful, we do not fully understand it, and the questions about how to build it well matter more than the question of what to call it when we get there.
