The Amazon AI cycle is the documented pattern following large-scale engineering headcount reductions justified by AI capability projections: AI gets deployed to systems the reduced team once managed, without adequate review infrastructure because the reviewers were eliminated, production failures follow, and new hires are required to manage the AI that caused the failures.

The detail that spread furthest: the word "layoffs" appears in none of the official communications about the outage. The language used instead was "availability has not been good recently." The word "recently" in that sentence means "since we fired everyone."

The satire also describes the AI rating its own ability to replace senior infrastructure engineers at 8 out of 10. That confidence score came from training data, not from attempting the actual job. The nine-hour gap between discovering the production issue and resolving it is framed as "the gap between what AI rated itself and what it can actually do."

Engineers reading this were not laughing at a hypothetical company.

The Real Numbers Behind the Pattern

The specific figures in the satire are invented. The trend they represent is documented across the industry.

The confidence it expresses is calibrated to training conditions, not to the specific edge cases that actually break production.
